Your Guide to Smart Spending — August 22

How to stack discounts like a pro, free products at dm every day, and a 14% top-up for decluttering your bookshelf.

Layering discounts is one of my favorite saving tips that can turn a decent deal into a really good one. You might not be able to use two promo codes on the same order, but combining a personalized discount code with a site-wide sale or a discounted gift card? That often works — and saves more than you’d think. I’ll show you how I got €42 worth of food on Lieferando for €6, plus a few more examples, like Zalando, where this works really well. Also in this post: a €100 for opening a bank account, how to sell your old books and clothes for cash and get 14% on top, and how to get free stuff from dm — every day if you feel like it.

💡 Tip of the Week: How to Stack Discounts Like a Pro

Generally speaking, you can’t enter two promo codes on one order — but that doesn’t mean you can’t stack different types of discounts. One of my favorite money-saving hacks is combining a promo code with other kinds of promotions like in-app deals, ongoing sales, or discounted gift cards.

This works especially well on food delivery apps like Lieferando, Wolt, or Uber Eats, since they operate like marketplaces: restaurants often run their own offers (like 2-for-1 or 30% off selected dishes), while the platform sends out promo codes separately. These often combine beautifully.

Here’s how far this can go: this week, I ordered food from Burger Vision (my local burger joint) on Lieferando. The restaurant had a 2-for-1 deal on multiple items in the app so I got my order with 50% off, plus I also had a personalized €15 coupon I got from Lieferando via email. Total value of the food? €42. What I paid? €6. Yes, I couldn't believe it either.

One more classic combo: a discount you get for signing up as a new customer (or for subscribing to a store’s newsletter), paired with ongoing sales. A slightly different tactic is buying discounted gift cards. I stock up on Zalando gift cards at 15% off whenever Payback runs a promo on them. When there is a sale on Zalando’s website, I can pay with the gift card, and use a discount code at checkout. You can read more about saving money with gift cards here – I buy them regularly, and I think it’s one of the most overlooked ways to save money when you shop online.

🔥 This Week’s Top Deals

📚 +14% on Top When You Sell Books or Clothes with Momox

Back in the day, I used to have a full home library — but after moving a few too many times, I now prefer to keep it lean. I sell or give away most of the books I’ve read, and for selling, I use Momox because it's so simple to use (and because I found that selling books on Kleinanzeigen doesn't really work).

It’s also a convenient option for selling clothes, especially if you don’t feel like listing everything on Vinted and dealing with buyers one by one. You will definitely earn more per piece on Vinted (Momox payouts for clothes are quite low), but Momox is great when you just want to pack up a box and be done with it. I usually sell nicer things on Vinted and send the rest of the clothes to Momox or donate them.

To sell your things, download the Momox app (you can also use your browser, but the app is more convenient). The app has two sections: one for books and media (like CDs and DVDs), and one for clothing. For books, just scan the barcode to get an instant quote. For clothes, choose the brand and category, and you’ll get a price (photo upload is optional).

Clothes you’re selling need to be in good condition, but books are usually accepted even when visibly used. Once you’ve created your box of accepted items, you’ll get a prepaid shipping label to send it off for free. You can get paid directly to your bank account — or opt for a voucher worth 20% more that you can use to shop for books and clothes on the platform.

For a little extra decluttering motivation, you get +14% extra when you sell at least €30 worth of books/media or €30 worth of clothes until August 25. Just use code SUMMERLOVE when finalizing your sale. Sell on Momox.

Selling books on Momox is easy, and the pricing is transparent.

🛍️ dm Gift Weeks: Free Product with Every Visit

I absolutely love this dm promotion — they ran it last year as well, and I walked away with at least €20 worth of free products. The idea is simple: for every in-store purchase of €1 or more (or €10 online), you get a coupon for a free product to use next time. The promotion runs until September 24, 2025, and you can use it daily. If you live in a city, chances are you’ve got a dm nearby (mine is just 10 minutes away), which makes it easy to drop by a few times a week.

To join, install the Mein dm app (available for iOS and Android), create an account, and scan your dm card QR code at checkout. Don’t forget that dm is also a Payback partner, so you can combine this promo with Payback coupons (often 15x points, which amounts to 7.5% cashback). You can link your Payback account to your dm app and activate coupons directly there.

The gifts vary, but last year I got deodorant, shampoo, candy, wet wipes etc. It’s not just a smart way to save money — it’s also kinda fun. The more trips you spread your shopping over, the more free products you’ll collect. If you need more ideas for your shopping list, besides the obvious essentials like body wash and toothpaste, I really like dm’s selection of organic food — it’s good quality and very affordable. 💳 €100 Welcome Bonus with Comdirect

If you’re after a solid banking bonus that doesn’t require jumping through too many hoops, Comdirect is now offering €100 for new customers (or those who closed their account more than 6 months ago) — up from €75 they offered last month. It’s one of the easiest sign-up bonuses around: you don’t need to move your salary there or make it your main account.

Here’s how it works: open a free account and agree to receive promotional emails (don’t unsubscribe until your bonus arrives). Then, within the first three months, make five transactions of at least €25 each. That’s it — your bonus will be paid out automatically in month four.

The account is free for the first 6 months, and stays free if you receive at least €700/month (a self-transfer works), or make three card payments per month via Apple or Google Pay. It also stays free if you’re under 28 and a student, intern, or trainee. You get a free Visa debit card when you open an account, and you can add a Girocard for €1/month if you need it. Sign up for Comdirect here.

If you’d like a bigger reward, Berliner Volksbank offers €200 as a welcome bonus — but it requires three monthly incoming payments of €700 or more (like salary or student financial aid). Despite the name, you don’t need to live in Berlin to become a customer.

Easy, free for the first 6 months and with a good welcome bonus — Comdirect account is a no-brainer.
