Rewe is one of Germany's most popular supermarket chains. While it isn't the cheapest option for grocery shopping in Germany and not quite as budget-friendly as Aldi, Lidl, Penny or Netto, it offers higher-quality products and a more pleasant shopping experience than those chains, making it a preferred choice for many German shoppers. Want to enjoy grocery shopping in Rewe without breaking the bank? Here are our top tips to make your trips to Rewe slightly easier on your wallet.

Check Discounts in the Rewe App

The Rewe app is very useful for seeing all the special deals and coupons in your local store. Before you head to the store (or while you're wandering the aisles), take a moment to browse through the offers and activate coupons you’d like to use. Scan the QR code in your app at checkout to apply discounts and save money on your grocery shopping.

Maximize Payback Points for Extra Savings

Payback is the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to cashback on shopping in Germany, and Rewe is one of Payback's major partners. They always have active coupons that multiply the Payback points you earn on a purchase – it’s not uncommon to see 10x points coupons. If you link your Payback account in your Rewe app, you can activate Payback coupons directly there, so you won’t have to look for them in the Payback app separately. You will also only have to scan a Rewe app QR code at checkout, and your Payback points will be awarded automatically.

Other online shopping cashback websites Iike Shoop and iGraal also give cashback for shopping at Rewe — but only when you shop online. If you (like most people) prefer buying groceries in store, Payback is your best bet.

Use Rewe's Delivery Service

Rewe's delivery service can be surprisingly economical. It's perfect for when you need to stock up on drinks or other heavy items, or want to buy groceries for the whole week ahead. With Rewe, you get exactly the same prices as in-store without the markups of quick grocery delivery services. While there's usually a delivery fee of €1,90 to €2,90, they offer free delivery one day a week — check what day it is in your area! The minimum order is €50 — which, let's be honest, with current grocery prices in Germany you'll likely reach before you know it.

You have to place your order at least a couple of days ahead and choose a 2-hour delivery slot that fits your schedule. Another option is Rewe’s pick-up service, which works well if you don’t want to plan days ahead — just place your order online, and it’ll be ready for pick-up from your local Rewe in a few hours.

I find Rewe's delivery service to be a very convenient way to do grocery shopping in Germany, and I use it quite often. One more reason to shop online: studies found that online grocery shopping helps people avoid impulse purchases and stick to their shopping list more effectively than when they shop in store. Plus, I really like the fact that you can easily compare prices online, making it simple to choose the best deals.

Pro tip: Payback often offers more bonus points on Rewe's delivery and pick-up services, making them more cost-effective compared to in-store shopping. You're not being lazy; you're being economical! Or that’s what you can tell yourself.

Become a Rewe Product Tester

Who doesn't love free food? Rewe's product testing platform is a fun way to try new products without spending a cent. There's usually two or three ongoing tests at any given time – subscribe to their product test newsletter to be informed about new ones. When you spot a product that piques your interest, apply by answering a couple of questions about your shopping habits (it only takes 20 seconds).

If you're selected, you'll get to pick up your free product at your local Rewe, try it out, and then leave a short review. While you might not be chosen for every test, the odds are in your favor – I participated in 15 tests in the last year, sampling some gourmet food (like wagyu beef burgers, dark chocolate, nuts) and household products (laundry pods, cleaning supplies). It's a nice way to discover new favorites, all while giving your wallet a well-deserved break from the usual grocery expenses in Germany.

Understand Rewe's Private Labels

Knowing the difference between private labels is key to finding cheap groceries in Germany. By opting for Ja! or Rewe Beste Wahl over big-name brands, you can significantly reduce your grocery bill without compromising on quality. Here's your guide to Rewe's in-house brands:

  • Ja!: The budget-friendly option for everyday essentials that are significantly cheaper than name brands. Don't be put off by the simple packaging: the quality is still high, making it a solid choice for everyday shopping.

  • Rewe Beste Wahl: Higher quality at a price point slightly higher than Ja!, but still very reasonable. Another good option for affordable grocery shopping.

  • Rewe Bio: Organic food, slightly more expensive than the Beste Wahl line. Many fruits and vegetables in Rewe are available in both organic and regular versions.

  • Rewe Feine Welt: Premium, gourmet products like steaks, high-end cheese, and desserts. Skip these for maximum savings – or indulge when you want to treat yourself!
